Seventh Generation Video Games - What's that? Here's a brief history.

We are now all experiencing The Seventh Generation of video games. You might say that we are all Children of the Seventh Generation; everyone and all ages and yet, one wonders how many have even heard of it!

The Seventh Generation brought the arrival of new disc formats, albeit that only one format seems to have survived to this day: the Blue-ray disc as used by the PlayStation 3 and the HD DVD as used by the Xbox 360. The internet sports radio HD DVD was used through an optional accessory but this later fell by the wayside in the format war that ensued. Not Microsoft's finest moment!

One really significant feature to arrive on the scene is the use of motion as an input medium. This is of course used extensively by the Nintendo Wii and also by different means, the Playstation 3. The Wii of course also utilises Infra Red tracking; perhaps the mainstay of the Wii concept. Last but not least, all Seventh Generation systems support standard wireless controllers.

Of course, only the biggest players in manufacturing have been able to develop the Seventh Generation games systems:

XBox 360

Microsoft are behind the XBox 360 and believe it or not, this was launched as long ago asNovember 2005. Their HD DVD drive didn't really damansara malaysia off and although originally available as an accessory, the format has been dropped.

The XBox Live service can be connected to the internet either through its built-in Ethernet port or its Wi-Fi accessory. Currently available in three versions, the XBox can be bought in the entry level "Arcade" version; a Standard malaysia airlines system using a hard drive and an "Elite" version, also using HD. The biggest difference between these versions is their storage capacity.. The Arcade edition has 256MB storage, the Standard version has a 60GB hard drive capacity, whilst the Elite comes with a 120GB drive. They all come with wireless controllers and to make it clear if one has splashed out on the Elite, the console and controllers are in Black, so your friends will definitely know! The other differences relate to what games are bundled, cables etc.

The Xbox 360 is capable of outputting full 1080p through HDMI and component cables.

Sony Playstation 3

The Sony Playstation 3 was launched in Japan and the USA in November 2006. Europe had to wait for the PS3 until March 2007.

All PlayStation 3s come with a hard drive and are able to play Blue-ray disc movies and games, straight from the box. The PlayStation 3 was the first video game console to support HDMI out of the box, utilizing full 1080p. For the anoraks out there, "HDMI" stands for High-Definition Multimedia Interface and the "1080" refers to the number of lines of vertical resolution and 1080 horizontal scan lines - those who remember the old CRT televisions will remember being able to see the lines as there were far less. The bottom line with HDMI is fabulous resolution!

Central to the Wii experience is the Wii's cutting edge controller, which aficionados will know as "the Wii remote" and it does indeed resemble a TV remote control unit. The players face the system sensor, which also emits infrared light. This is captured by an infrared receiver in the Wii remote and is then translated by the brilliant software to interpret orientation relative to the source. People used to think one would need to use Virtual Reality headgear to experience this sensation. It was the stuff you would see in Sci-Fi movies. The Wii has brought this into the average family's living room.

The Wii is the first Nintendo console to be back-compatible with previous Nintendo consoles and will be seen as a bonus for owners of GameCube games; in fact the Wii will support four GameCube controllers and two memory cards.

Since my first visit to Malaysia high speed broadband internet broadband access 1994, I've always been curious about Langkawi; an island very close to the border of Kingdom of Thailand. Back than my friends told me it would be empty because of rain season. So I've never been there. I've arrived there in October, 2006 which was almost the beginning of high season. I've flew to Kuala Lumpur with Gulf Air and than to Langkawi with Air Asia. The airport is small, few shops and cafes, lots of car rental benches and taxis. It's clever to rent a car in Langkawi because taxi is more expensive than big cities. Also there are no public transports, if you want to go around, you always need a taxi. It's very easy to find a good deal for a small car or with a little more budget a Perodua jeep. More expensive cars are available but I don't think it's necessary.

There are lots of hotels and resorts in Langkawi. Most of them are stationed around Pantai Cenang area. But if you want to live there, you don't have many choices.

If you want to live in Langkawi, you might prefer a condo. There are 5 choices; Century Surya which is close to the west Kuah Town, almost in the middle of the town; Kondo Istana, Chogm Villa which is what I've chosen back than, Sri Lagenda is right at the opposite of Chogm Villa and in a very remote place between Pantai Cenang and Pantai Kok; Perdana Beach Resort. Also you can find Malay houses around Pantai Cenang or other areas. It's really hard to find a decent one and usually most of them need lots of repairs.

Prices vary between 1000rm (~$290) and 3500rm (~$1000). Kondo Istana and Century dsl internet service looks very nice but they have poor pools and prices are high compared to others. I strongly recommend Chogm Villa which is a very beautiful place. Apartment quality is same as the other condos and it has a very big beautiful pool.

For shopping there are not much choices. You can go to Langkawi Fair which is the biggest shopping mall Maxis Broadband Wireless You can find a good supermarket here and lots of shops where you can buy nice souvenirs, furniture etc. Most of the good quality and brand shops are here. There is also Langkawi Parade at the west entrance of the town. It's the poorer Tm Online Malaysia of Langkawi Fair. But it has a large supermarket at the bottom floor where you can find lots of goods. Other than these malls you can go to Trimula to buy mobile phones, some electronics and house accessories like curtains, window blinds.

Food in Langkawi is really good. There are lots of choices. You can find almost any type of cousine here; Thai, Japanese, Malay, Chinese, Indian, Italian and even Russian. Because of its touristic state, island has very good high quality restaurants. But for long term, you need to learn where to buy goods to cook by yourself. Other than buying from markets, there is a wet market in Padang Matsirat which is close to Langkawi International Airport. Here you can buy fresh fruits and vegetables as well as fish, crabs and lobster.

Going in and out of island is a little problem. Penang is quite close, you can go there by ferry but ferry hours for a round trip to Penang is not useful at all. From airport, you can fly to almost anywhere. Like any other Southeast Asia country, flights are really cheap. If you want to go to mainland by car, you must send your car one day before with freight service than take it there. If you bought your car in Langkawi, because of its duty free status, you can use it in mainland not more than one month.

Once you get your own car or bike, it's really easy to find your way around in Langkawi. People are quite friendly and most of them speak English. Also the foreign community of the island is really large and they are really willing to help.
